So much has been going on that I haven't had time to give a run down on the change of seasons here @ End of the Road.. for those of you new to my blog, we call our place The End of theRoad because that's exactly where we live. Our home is at the end of a dead end road that runs off a remote dead end road. when we first bought the property no one was out in this area but us. We didn't have electrcity at the time ( by choice) and we had the most fun observing the stars, reading, playing games... we were so untechno!
But, here we are ball and chained to the internet...anyhow..
The dogwood and crepe myrtles have bloomed and the oaks, poplars, hickory, pecan, birch and other varietys are in bud. The ever faithful pines have cast their golden pollen over everything..puddles are glossed over with the stuff.. clothes ont he line take on a yellow hue... the car looks red through a haze of gold. Awful stuff! Fortunately only Chris seems to be having effects this year.
We are debating a new batch of chicks for the season. In the past the babies have roosted in the house, but the dogs and a couple of male cats are not as obliging as the past...so, the decision will be made according to how much time we have to redo the hen house.
No new kids this year. Goatee and Shee sort of became enough goat for us. We ahve no little ones drinking lots of milk these days although I'm sure the cats would have appreciated a wet goat...
We didn't plant any cold weather crops this year. Until we can get a decent cold frame up it's pointless.. our seasons go from cold to hot with no in between. However, we are planning the garden out and will do beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green peppers, hot peppers, and luffa. we are debating on corn and the barrel method for a few potaoes. There will be a large patch for melons & pumpkins
The tires will hold the tomatoes and green peppers.
In additon I will be increasing the herb garden.. I have wanted to do a Bible garden , with all the herbs mentioned in the Bible for years... this might be it.
I have been researching using the wild marsh purple cone flowers that will bloom in the back part of the farm, also the making of a calendula slave with some other herbs and flowers.
Ang wants a flower bed and we have plans to till a section for her this weekend. Last night she picked out several plants.
we will go again with a sunflower garden. The birds and squirrels appreciate it.
We opted NOT to mow the back meadow. The folks on the property adjoining ours logged this year. The deer and other wildlife have been trying to find refuge and we felt the benefits of providing them shelter out weighs the fire risk at this point..
No new building projects for this year.
We do have a pond project planned we hope to build a pind stocked with some sort of fish that works a hydroponic system to the cucumber bed. Should be interesting..
We do have a batch of barn kittens! They are so cute! We have found homes for all but one.
